Bear with me – – – I promise to pull my title and the next two questions together in just a minute!

Q #1 – What were arguably the two biggest Transportation Disasters of the 20th Century?

Q #2: Were they insured, and, if so, by whom?

A #1: The Titanic & The Hindenburg

A #2: Yes, and they both were Insured by Lloyd’s of London. Lloyd’s was thrilled to have the prestigious honor of Insuring The Titanic, the ship even God couldn’t sink.”  Well, as we all know, it did sink!  As a tribute to their reputation and integrity, Lloyd’s had all of the claim’s regarding that terrible tragedy paid off within thirty days!

The Hindenburg, which exploded during landing eighty years ago on May 6th, 1937 had purchased a policy for six million Reichsmarks ($15 million then, $80 million today).  The 10-page policy is currently on display in a New York City museum.

Now, think about the following people and what their most notable physical feature is:  Betty Grable; Dolly Parton; Jimmy Durante; Troy Polamalu; and Tom Jones.  In case some of these names are unfamiliar, let me share with you the answer:  Grable – Legs; Parton – Breasts; Durante – Nose; Polamalu – Hair and Jones – Chest Hair.  Interestingly enough, like The Titanic & The Hindenburg, each of these were also insured by Lloyd’s of London! In a moment you will see why your business needs to be aware of LEGS, BREASTS, BODY HAIR AND YOUR GLENDALE, ARIZONA BUSINESS INSURANCE BROKER.

“You might think, Jim Bivona of Bivona Insurance Group, LLC, an Independent Insurance Agency that services the Phoenix Metro area regarding Insurance including Phoenix, Scottsdale, Glendale, and Peoria Arizona to name just a few, mused, “that the Insurance Policies issued were nothing more than a big publicity stunt.  The reality is,” he continued, “they were strategic business decisions.”

To fully understand Bivona’s comment, consider the following:

  • In the 1940s, Grable was the biggest Box Office draw of WW II, explaining why her legs insured for $1 million, coining the phrase, “Million Dollar Legs!”
  • Dolly insured her 40DD breasts for $4 million!
  • Comedian Jimmy Durante, nicknamed “the Schnozz” because of his nose, insured it for $140,000 in the 1930s.
  • Actually, it was HEAD & SHOULDERS who insured Polamalu’s hair because he had a commercial contract with them. Its value: $1 million.
  • During the 1960s & ‘70s, Tom Jones believed that his chest hair added so much to his “macho” image that he insured it for $5 million!

“The thing of vital importance in all of these examples,” Bivona shared with an almost solemn voice and an air of wisdom, “is that these individuals recognized what was most important to their continued business success, and took the necessary precautions to protect them as what they were – valuable business assets! Unfortunately, too many businesses don’t recognize what the real assets of their business are, or they foolishly ignore the need to properly insure them.”
